They are hardworking, honest, and deeply rooted in their traditions.
Yet for 80 years, this same community produced fewer than 4 college graduates. Only 20 men and 3 women ever completed higher secondary education. Government schools existed on paper — but not in practice.
The children grew up without classrooms. The girls grew up without choices.
And still — remarkably — this island recorded zero crime. No murders. No violence. No strikes. A community of extraordinary character, held back only by one thing: the absence of opportunity.

For more than 300 years, Bhit Island has been home to a resilient fishing community living in the waters near Manora, Karachi.
Mahmood Ibrahim looked at Bhit Island and did not see poverty. He saw potential. He saw thousands of children who deserved the same quality of education as any child in Karachi’s finest schools.
In March 2007, he turned that belief into action — and Karachi Islands School was born.
Today, that seed has grown into a fully functioning English-medium institution, from Nursery all the way to Secondary — and now expanding into Higher Secondary.
For over four decades, we have worked to improve lives through compassionate service. Every initiative we take is focused on creating long-term positive impact for future generations.
I speak today not only as the founder of Karachi Islands School, but as a witness to the strength, resilience, and untapped potential of the people of Bhit Island and our neighboring coastal communities.
For generations, our fishermen have lived with dignity through honest labor, yet they have remained distant from the opportunities, infrastructure, and educational access that define progress in the city of Karachi. This gap is not a reflection of capability—it is a reflection of neglect. And that is what we are committed to changing.
